After a nearly four-month project, Northeast Regional Medical Center (NRMC) in Kirksville, Missouri, has launched its new MRI unit. The upgraded unit features a larger bore and updated software designed to enhance patient comfort and reduce scan times.
Construction for the new unit began in October 2024 when the radiology entrance was temporarily closed. The previous MRI unit, which had been in use since 2007, offered limited capabilities. To accommodate the new equipment, NRMC expanded and updated the existing MRI zone. During this period, the hospital provided MRI services using a mobile unit that will soon be removed.
Trisha Roan, director of medical imaging at NRMC, expressed satisfaction with the completed construction: “We are thrilled that construction is completed and the new unit is in place. The MRI zone even got new paint, countertops, and other needed upgrades.” Among these improvements is an MRI-compatible patient monitor offering expanded functionality. Roan noted, “We can now scan patients with MRI-compatible implantable devices, which allows us to provide more services locally.”
With the project finished, the radiology entrance has reopened for patients needing medical imaging, lab appointments, and pre-admission testing from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Registration for other services will continue at the main entrance lobby.
NRMC plans further expansion with upcoming construction on a linear accelerator and radiation oncology program aimed at establishing a cancer treatment center. A groundbreaking ceremony for this initiative is scheduled for February 26. Radiation oncology services are anticipated to be available by summer 2025.
The new MRI unit and updated zone are now fully operational.
