Laurie Means, a resident of New London, Missouri, emphasizes the critical role of annual mammograms in early cancer detection. As a newly retired individual, Laurie prioritized her health and utilized Hannibal Regional Radiology’s $99 mammogram offer in October 2023, leading to an unexpected cancer diagnosis.

Upon a routine mammogram revealing a concerning spot, Laurie underwent further tests, including an ultrasound and MRI. These tests indicated potential cancer, with the MRI identifying an additional area of concern. A subsequent biopsy confirmed two different types of breast cancer.

Laurie faced the complex decision of where to seek treatment and ultimately chose to remain at Hannibal Regional. She felt assured by her daughter's trust in the facility's care. Laurie shares, “I could have gone to a bigger city for cancer care, but the care I received right here at home was just as good if not better.”

Her treatment plan, overseen by oncologist Dr. Kevin Palka, included 20 weeks of chemotherapy before surgery. Post-chemotherapy, Laurie collaborated with surgeon Dr. Stacey Copeland on a double mastectomy. Laurie continues follow-ups with both Dr. Palka and Dr. Copeland.

Laurie reflects, “I was an emotional mess, but everyone around me was kind and supportive. I had a great team that helped me get through an ugly situation.”

Hannibal Regional emphasizes the importance of early detection through advanced technology for quick and accurate diagnoses. Laurie highlights, “In sharing my story, I want to remind women how important it is to get an annual mammogram.”

In light of Women’s Health Awareness Month, Hannibal Regional Radiology offers 3D mammograms for $99 throughout May. For more information or to schedule a mammogram, call 573-248-1300.
