A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a stroke affects someone in the United States every 40 seconds. Prompt medical treatment is vital as a stroke can lead to lasting brain damage or death. Recognizing stroke symptoms early using the acronym BE FAST is crucial.

Key indicators of a stroke include sudden loss of balance, vision problems, facial drooping, weakness in one arm, and difficulty speaking. Immediate action by calling 911 is necessary if these symptoms arise.

Stroke risk factors include age and family history, but many can be reduced with lifestyle changes. Keeping blood pressure in check, eating a balanced diet, exercising, not smoking, moderating alcohol consumption, and managing diabetes are important for stroke prevention.

Hannibal Regional is organizing a Stroke Education Expo on May 28, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Hannibal Conference Center, part of Hannibal Regional Medical Group. The event, honoring Stroke Awareness Month, provides insights from healthcare professionals and offers resources for prevention and support for survivors and caregivers.

For more information about the Stroke Education Expo, interested individuals can contact 573-629-3444.
