Adair County has been awarded the Agri-Ready County Designation by Missouri Farmers Care (MFC), a coalition of over 40 agricultural groups. This designation is part of an initiative to support agricultural development, economic growth, and literacy programs in agriculture across Missouri.

The Adair County Commissioners—Mark Shahan, Bill King, and Gayla McHenry—expressed their commitment to this new partnership. They stated, "Agri-Ready County Designation has been a long time coming for Adair County. We have been asked by local farmers and ranchers to pursue Agri-Ready Designation, which began conversations with Missouri Farmers Care. Our Commission is unified and the time is right to enter into this partnership to support agricultural opportunities. We are ready for economic growth in Adair County."

The program aims to advance local agricultural enterprises and promote counties as prime locations for business expansion while enhancing workforce readiness for careers in agriculture. It also involves partnerships with local FFA leaders to implement educational programs in third-grade classrooms, focusing on various aspects of agriculture through interactive activities.

Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn acknowledged the county's efforts: “I appreciate the leadership of Adair County for this Agri-Ready Designation and for saying ‘Welcome, we are open for business.’ Agriculture is the backbone of northeast Missouri and this important designation from Missouri Farmers Care will strengthen relationships and offer opportunity for growth in all segments of the industry.”

According to a 2021 study by the Missouri Department of Agriculture, Adair County's agriculture sector generated $816.8 million in economic output. The sector supports 4,054 jobs and contributes $243 million in household income locally.

Ashley McCarty, executive director of MFC, praised the county's commitment: “With this designation, the Adair County Commission has taken a strong stand in support of agriculture. As a fifth generation Adair County rancher, I’m encouraged by local leaders who recognize agriculture’s contribution to our economy and sense of community."

To apply for Agri-Ready Designation, counties must meet specific requirements such as not having ordinances that conflict with state agricultural laws. Once compliance is confirmed by MFC after application submission, the designation is awarded.

Adair County now joins 73 other counties in Missouri with this designation. More details about MFC can be found at www.mofarmerscare.com.
