For years, Leanne Allemang-Whaley from Kirksville, Missouri, faced significant health challenges related to her weight. After her husband's job required frequent travel and she spent long periods alone in a remote home, she experienced increased inactivity and emotional eating. Over time, her weight reached 270 pounds, leading to difficulties with movement and contributing to depression and social isolation. She also developed high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and uncontrolled diabetes.

Seeking change, Leanne moved closer to her son in Kirksville. She began walking regularly and made other lifestyle adjustments for both physical and mental well-being. Upon establishing care with Dr. Justin Puckett at Complete Family Medicine in Kirksville, she was identified as a potential candidate for weight loss surgery.

Leanne was referred to Dr. Mujeeb Siddiqui at Hannibal Regional Weight Management Solutions for evaluation. Following a three-month preparation process that included nutrition counseling and medical clearances, she underwent Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.

The coordination among her healthcare providers played a key role in her progress. Her primary care physician remained involved throughout the process alongside the bariatric team at Hannibal Regional Weight Management Solutions. Leanne also received mental health support from Morgan Gaeke.

“I feel so fortunate to have a care team that’s all on the same page,” Leanne shared. “It’s so nice knowing that my primary care doctor, surgeon, and therapist are all working together to help me succeed, not just with surgery, but with long-term health. It’s a well-rounded approach that really works.”

Her recovery went smoothly with minimal pain after surgery. She resumed walking earlier than expected and expressed appreciation for the consistent support provided by Dr. Siddiqui's team: “They’re always friendly and encouraging. I’ve always felt like they truly care about me,” she said.

Participation in the bariatric support group has also contributed significantly to her ongoing success by allowing open discussion of challenges and achievements with others facing similar experiences.

Two years post-surgery, Leanne has lost nearly 170 pounds—reducing her weight from 270 pounds to just over 100 pounds—and now manages her blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and diabetes effectively. She reports increased activity levels and social engagement: “My life is completely different from what it was before… I love being social now, and I especially love mentoring other people who are struggling with their weight.” She adds that she feels energetic enough to joke about feeling like a teenager again.
