Two years ago, Dorian Stewart from Hannibal, Missouri, began experiencing chest pains. Initially dismissing them as mild heartburn, she did not seek immediate medical attention. However, her family history of heart disease—her father and brother had died from heart attacks and her sister had survived one—prompted her sister to urge her to consult a doctor.

Dorian contacted her primary care physician at another healthcare system but found the process slow and frustrating. It took over six weeks to see a cardiologist, who recommended stent placement after failing all tests. The procedure was scheduled for two weeks later.

Uncertain about the delay, Dorian consulted her niece who works at Hannibal Regional Medical Group (HRMG). Her niece suggested getting a second opinion from Dr. Santhosh Mannem, an interventional cardiologist at HRMG. Dorian saw Dr. Mannem the next day.

Dr. Mannem conducted a thorough evaluation and ordered a cardiac catheterization immediately. The results revealed that three of Dorian’s arteries were 100% blocked, necessitating urgent open-heart surgery.

Reflecting on the experience, Dorian stated: “Had I followed the first doctor’s recommendation, I may not be here today. I am so thankful Dr. Mannem took charge and saved my life.”

Post-surgery, Dorian completed cardiac rehabilitation at Hannibal Regional Hospital which helped rebuild her confidence and overcome fear of raising her heart rate. Inspired by the program, she purchased a treadmill and committed to regular exercise.

Dorian continues to receive care from Dr. Mannem for monitoring cholesterol levels and maintaining heart health. She expressed: “I am so impressed by his knowledge,” adding that it is reassuring knowing her heart is in good hands with Dr. Mannem.
