Northeast Regional Medical Center (NRMC) in Kirksville, Missouri, has released its Community Benefit Report for 2024, highlighting an estimated impact of $56 million. The report outlines the hospital's extensive contributions to healthcare and community support throughout the year.
The medical center recorded over 91,000 patient encounters across various facilities. Notably, NRMC's emergency room handled more than 13,000 cases annually, providing essential care regardless of patients' financial capabilities. In 2024 alone, NRMC delivered charity and uncompensated care valued at over $12.7 million and assisted patients in accessing necessary medications and devices.
NRMC also actively engages with local organizations that address social determinants of health. Contributions include initiatives like the Jars of Love Peanut Butter drive for The Pantry for Adair County and donations to groups such as United Way of Northeast Missouri.
Patrick Avila, CEO of NRMC, emphasized the ongoing efforts to enhance medical services and support community health access: "Our work to grow and enhance the medical services we provide is ongoing...we are proud to make an impact on the health, well-being and quality of life in Kirksville and surrounding communities."
In terms of infrastructure improvements, NRMC invested over $1.3 million in capital projects last year. These enhancements included acquiring an orthopedic surgical robot and upgrading hospital equipment such as beds and CT technology.
A significant development was preparing to reinstate radiation oncology services by installing a linear accelerator. This initiative aims to expand local treatment options through a new outpatient oncology center.
Additionally, NRMC marked its 250th robotic-assisted surgery case in 2024. Robotic technology has reportedly improved outcomes in surgeries by enhancing precision and reducing recovery times.
Avila highlighted strategic investments made by NRMC: “We are strategically applying our resources to help area residents have access to the care they need close to home.”
As one of Kirksville's major employers with a payroll exceeding $27.9 million, NRMC contributes significantly to the local economy through job creation and tax payments totaling over $3.7 million in 2024.
The medical center also focuses on developing future healthcare professionals through collaborations with local nursing programs and A.T. Still University's graduate education program.
NRMC remains committed to promoting wellness via initiatives like their free monthly e-newsletter offering health tips for all ages.
