Shanna Barker, a registered nurse at Northeast Regional Medical Center (NRMC), has been honored with the 2025 Nursing Excellence Award. Barker, who joined NRMC in 2018 as a labor and delivery nurse, also leads childbirth preparation classes for expectant mothers.

The Nursing Excellence Award is given to nurses who show outstanding care, compassion, service, and innovation. Recipients are recognized for their teamwork, mentorship, leadership, and efforts to promote health within the community.

Barker received the award during a surprise presentation attended by her colleagues. She was given a crystal trophy, a cash prize, and additional gifts.

“Shanna is an exceptional nurse who is deeply valued by both patients and staff. She consistently goes above and beyond, showing genuine care and compassion in every situation,” stated Cynthia Green, BSN, RNC-OB, director for Women’s Services at NRMC. “Her willingness to help whenever needed and her ability to adapt to any challenge make her an incredible team player. She’s highly versatile; she has also been trained in the emergency department where she demonstrates the same professionalism, skill, and dedication. Patients appreciate her kindness and attentiveness, and staff rely on her strong work ethic and positive attitude. She is truly an asset to our team”.

Barker graduated from Truman State University in 2017. She has been married for 27 years and has four children. In addition to her nursing career, she co-owns TSB Rentals and participates actively in her church.

This marks the fifth year that NRMC has presented this peer-nominated award as part of its ongoing recognition of nurses’ contributions toward improving patient health outcomes.
