Rep. Sam Graves, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri’s 6th district since 2001, used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on air travel operations.

On November 7, 2025, Graves posted that "The FAA will begin reducing airspace capacity on Friday by 10% at 40 airports. As I’ve said all along, Sen. Schumer’s shutdown will cause delays. However, we will not compromise safety." He attributed the reduction in airspace capacity to actions taken by Senator Chuck Schumer and emphasized that safety would remain a priority despite operational delays.

Later the same day, Graves reiterated his stance on the negotiation process during a government shutdown, stating "The government needs to open and then we can negotiate. That’s how this works."

In another post dated November 8, 2025, Graves criticized Senate Democrats for their handling of the situation: "Air traffic controllers are being held hostage for political gain. It’s time for Chuck Schumer and his fellow liberal Senators to vote to reopen the government, so we can get America flying again."

Graves’ comments come amid heightened tensions over a federal government shutdown affecting various agencies including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The reduction in airspace capacity is expected to affect operations at major airports across the country.

Sam Graves has served in Congress since replacing Pat Danner in 2001 and previously held seats in both chambers of Missouri's state legislature from 1993 through 2001. Born in Tarkio, Missouri in 1963, he continues to reside there and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri earned in 1986.
